The production of Jeeps built under the Korando name in started in 1983 by Geohwa Company.[3] In 1985, Geohwa was taken over by Dong-A Motor, SsangYong's predecessor. In 1986, when the SsangYong Group took over Dong-A Motor, its name was changed to the SsangYong Motor Company and began to export the jeeps to Japan and in 1988 to Europe.[4] Besides the engine and drivetrain, all parts are interchangeable with the Jeep CJ-7. The Korando was also outwardly similar to the CJ-7. A 9-seat extended version was also available called the Korando K9.[5] Production ended in 1996.
After the introduction of this model the company made a licensed version of the original Isuzu Trooper and sold it under the Korando Family name, but that car was only marketed it in South Korea, South-East Asia and to a lesser degree South America. It used the Trooper's 2.2l diesel engine but later versions of this Trooper based Korando are reported to use a 2.3l Mercedes-Benz turbo diesel engine.[6]

It features a choice of 2.3 litre and 3.2 litre gasoline engines or 2.9 litre diesel engine, all produced on license from Mercedes-Benz, accompanied by a 5-speed manual Borg-Warner gearbox. The interior of the second generation Korando was unique because it had a steering wheel arch on either side. This was to make converting to right-hand-drive easier. On the passenger's side, a handle was fitted in the arch.[9] This generation was sold as the Daewoo Korando from 1999 to 2001, as Daewoo took over SsangYong but was forced to sell it. Korando cabrio. Released in 2001, the third generation Korando was merely just an upgrade of the second generation.[10] Production ended in 2006. In 2008 Russian TagAZ began to assemble Korando as the TagAZ Tager. [edit] Fourth generation SsangYong Korando

Giorgietto Giugiaro The fourth generation Korando, codenamed the SsangYong C200[11] is began production in late 2010.[12] It is to be the first car to be released as part of SsangYong's revised lineup.[13] It is smaller than its rivals, the Hyundai ix35 and Kia Sportage. The decision to name the C200 the Korando was done so by SsangYong importers.[14] The car will be sold in Russia as the SsangYong New Actyon.[15]
[edit] Features
The fourth generation Korando was released with only 6-speed manual transmission, however an automatic transmission, is being developed by the Australian company, Drivetrain Systems International. It is also to be offered as a two-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive from launch. Its combined fuel consumption is 7.3L/100 km and acceleration from 0–100 km takes approximately 10 seconds.[16] The engine available upon release is, a 2.0 liter turbodiesel producing 175 horsepower but a petrol engine is expected to be introduced too.[17]
The Korando comes with 6 airbags as standard, giving the car a 5-star EuroNCAP rating. The trunk is 480 liters however this can be expanded to 1300 liters when the seats are folded down.[18]
[edit] Reception
The new Korando was well received from a design perspective, with many reviewers noting design improvements over previous models, with critics calling it "a huge improvement over ugly previous efforts like the Rodius". Interior space too, was praised, as was the all-new monocoque chassis. However, the engine was criticized for not utilizing its full potential at low speeds, and being harsh at high speeds. The gearbox, too, was criticized for having "awkwardly spaced gear ratios" and that it amplified the poorness of the engine.[19][20]
[edit] Concept models
Since 2008, five concept cars (some named C200) have been unveiled:
[edit] C200 SsangYong C200 concept. The original concept, the C200, debuted at the 2008 Paris Motor Show[21] and has since been shown at many others. The concept received mostly positive feedback and was thought by many to be the vehicle that can turn SsangYong's reputation for having cars with questionable styling around.
[edit] C200 Aero
The C200 Eco made its debut at the 2009 Seoul Motor Show. If it was released, (a plan which never happened due to SsangYong's bankruptcy), it would have been offered with a choice of a 2.0 litre turbodiesel engine or 1.8 litre gasoline engine both outputting 132 kW (175 hp).[22]
[edit] C200 Eco A C200 Eco at the 2009 International Automobile Exhibition in Barcelona. The C200 Eco made its debut at the 2009 Seoul Motor Show. It is a hybrid which uses both a diesel engine and an electric one (powered by a 340 volt battery). It also uses a stop-start system which shuts off the engine during stops. Fuel saving will be around 25%.[23] The interior features a green trim and an airy cabin.
[edit] Korando C
Launched at the 2010 Busan International Motor Show, the new Korando C concept has stayed mostly the same as the previous concepts but has more aggressive styling and is said to be a representation of the production version. Performance-wise, the new concept has a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine and a confirmed power output of 135 kW (184 PS; 181 hp) and 360 N·m (270 lb·ft) of torque.[14] The interior is similar to that of the C200 Eco.[24]
[edit] Korando EV
Launched at the 2010 Busan International Motor Show, the new Korando EV was a fully electric version of the Korando C.[25] It has a top speed of 150 km/h, and a range of 180 km.[26] [edit] References ^ a b c d "ТагАЗ: Tagaz Tager". Tagaz.ru. http://www.tagaz.ru/cars/tager/. Retrieved 2010-10-15.

Its butch styling is different and coming from a country not recognised as a 4x4 manufacturer, didn't win it major acceptance in a competitive market more used to the subtle and proven Honda CR-V or Subaru Forester. Sales of the Korando ceased in 1998 - I've not seen many on the road so it can't have been all that successful. Some may not like the distinctive styling and may think its a little over the top for them. However, some of the newer 4x4's out there take styling even further and manage to loose the rugged 4x4 look. The build is tough and mechanically rugged with a fairly roomy interior. But like most 4x4's lacks the on-road refinement and heritage of the proven and more expensive luxury 4x4's.However, considering the Korando's standard equipment, all-terrain ability and proven reliability its worth every penny. (this is until you come to sell it!)The engines are solid bullet proof Mercedes engines that should see well over a 100k miles. Engines choices are a 2.3 petrol and a 2.9 turbo diesel, driving through a five-speed gearbox with selectable four-wheel drive. The gear change is similar to a MKII Land Rover !! That brings back memories... Don't consider the 2.3 with an auto box - its far to slow.....really, really slow....you'll 2cv's screaming up behind you!!These Mercedes engines are not state-of-the-art or even current but they are good solid units that deliver good power to the wheels. But more importantly, they are really reliable (probably more reliable than the current Mercs!)The 2.3 should be reliable but is quite thirsty as this is a heavy car. The diesel however provides ample torque and in my opinion is the best choice if you intend to try any off-roading or towing. If driven sensibly the diesel will deliver nearly 30mpg, which is not bad at all.Provided you can live with inevitable body roll and a bumpy ride that's on the hard side, Korando isn't a bad drive. It feels fairly agile, road holding is assured, and there's good all-round vision from the high cabin. You get fairly generous equipment which includes ABS and air conditioning as standard. Unfortunately, even though its well equipped the interior does look a bit cheap. The 4WD system is easily selectable and capable. The load space is good for this type of car and unobstructed. Seats are nothing special though I think the driving position would cause some people problems on longer drives. I personally didn't like the pedal positioning.Cost: When they were new you'd pay around 18k for the diesel and the same for the 2.3 petrol. There were lower spec models 2.9D LS which was around 16.6k. If you're looking for a used one you should be able to pick a diesel up for around 5k and it would be a good one. I've seen the odd one for less than that but I would expect that it would have seen better days.Servicing might be an issue as this is an older model, Daewoo, requires a full service every 12k miles with a minor service every 6k mile in between which might push costs up if you go to a main dealer.IF I were to go for one of these I'd go for the 2.9TD as this is not a bad car at all and is one you could live with on a daily basis. The 2.9TD has a good turn of speed and refinement. If you're looking for something fairly cheap and different that's fun and capable of dealing with anything a normal day will throw at it, its worth a look. ...less dogard 12.08.2005 Ciao members have rated this car review on average: very helpful Review of Ssangyong Korando Value for Money Road Handling Comfort Features Fuel consumption Looks Korando 2.9D GLS 1997 Advantages: Now holding prices very wellDisadvantages: None The Ssangyong Korando 2.9D 4x4 Station Wagon The only other 4x4 I have previously owned is a Range Rover Classic (Vogue). It’s not obvious from the impressively generic exterior, but this is the new Ssangyong Korando. This is the first monocoque vehicle that the Korean company has ever produced and represents the first steps in a re-launch that is intended to make the brand more competitive against major budget European makers. A 173bhp 2.0-litre turbodiesel motor, developed by the company independently, is the only motor available in the Korando. A six-speed auto and all-wheel drive is on offer, but we’re testing the entry-level two-wheel drive model. See first drive pics of the Ssangyong Korando 2.0d 2WD What’s it like? Rather bland in many respects, which for many will be an improvement on the rather eccentric previous models. When not under load the Korando is impressively refined by class standards, but otherwise the motor fails to meet modern diesel standards in terms of its usability. Power delivery is very peaky – significantly more so than is now usual in modern turbodiesels - with all of the 266lb ft of torque arriving between 2000-3000rpm. The effect of this is amplified by awkwardly spaced gear ratios. Second is very short, but changing up into third leaves the engine floundering beneath its limited power range. So powertrain is not something that Ssangyong can yet claim to have reached current European standards in, but ride quality is well judged – a little bouncy occasionally but nothing you wouldn’t expect of a softly sprung compact SUV, and body roll is also kept in check. Steering is entirely sterile and has a disconcerting elasticity around the dead-ahead, but it is linear enough in response. Passenger space is also very competitive, particularly for those in the back, though luggage capacity of 486 litres is some way behind class best. Should I buy one? By any standards the Korando is a significant step forward for its maker, but if it is to be priced similarly to the Hyundai ix35 and Kia Sportage, as Ssangyong suggests it will be, it is impossible to recommend. The Korando is not a bad car in isolation, just one that feels as if it has just reached the levels achieved by most of the obvious rivals one generation ago. So Ssangyong’s competition need not need worry too much right now, but if the company can make the same level of progress with its next generation then there is every possibility it – and the Korando - could become a serious contender. The original Korando was a Jeep built under licence in South Korea up to 2006. The new version is a modern crossover SUV designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro that will take SsangYong into one of the most buoyant sectors of the European car market. The compact C-segment sized SUV market now accounts for more than half of the total SUV sector in Europe, and this proportion is expected to grow in the coming months and years. The Korando's all-new e-XDi200 engine is at the heart of the crossover's appeal. A power output of 175PS is coupled to combined cycle fuel economy of 47mpg and CO2 emissions of only 157g/km. It's a refined 2.0-litre diesel engine, and is offered with both manual and automatic six-speed transmissions to power both front and four-wheel drive Korando models.Furthermore, the Korando range will be extended next year with the introduction of a new even more frugal diesel engine as well as a high-value petrol unit.Forming the basic appeal of a crossover SUV is a commanding driving position. A smooth ride has been achieved with the adoption of a double bush type sub-frame mounted suspension system, while extensive NVH engineering isolates occupants from external interruptions.Safety wise, six airbags - dual front, side and curtain - are fitted as standard, while there is also multi-function ESP (Electronic Stability Program), which integrates anti-rollover protection, brake assist, hill start assist and ESS (Emergency Stop Signal). Other standard safety features include first row active head restraints and ISOFIX.The Korando has been designed to reaffirm SsangYong's position in the minds of the European car buyer, and thus is loaded with kit to tempt buyers away from established competitors. The eco cruise control system efficiently manages the amount of fuel injected to maximise economy, a door mirror mounted LED puddle lamp helps passengers get in and out safely and comfortably even in dark areas and the Korando's towing ability has been at the core of its development from day one.Recognising the increasing importance of customisation and personal choice, the Korando is offered in one of seven exterior colours and a combination of interior shades and materials including leather seats. Buyers also have the option of a special interior specification featuring a unique orange highlight colour. The Korando will be revealed this autumn through the over 1,240 strong SsangYong international dealer network. The first Korando models will be delivered to UK buyers in January 2011. Rather good too.We like - Gutsy engine, lots of passenger space, very quiet cruisingWe don't like - Uninspired interior design, small boot, engine noise when idling and acceleratingFirst impressionsImage © SsangyongSsangyong is one of the smallest Korean car manufacturers, but it's been around for 50 years, with the Korando there at the very start. It recently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy but its sale to the Indian company Mahindra & Mahindra is currently almost complete. So Ssangyong is on a firm footing once again. There are 50 dealers in the UK, with 30 more promised over the next nine months. Some are regular car dealers, but you will find others that are agricultural merchants or truck dealers. That makes some sense, for until now Ssangyongs have been rugged 4x4s well suited to that area of business. But with the launch of the Korando, the company is aiming at the mainstream and lucrative 'crossover' market.Image © SsangyongThe desire for family vehicles that look a bit like four-wheel-drives but mostly aren't, is rapidly expanding. Nissan's Qashqai has been massively successful, drawing people from their Golfs and Focuses into a car with more presence and apparent ruggedness. The Korando is a direct competitor, far more modern than anything Ssangyong has produced in the past. Prices won't be released for a while yet, but it's promised to undercut the Hyundai ix35 by a meaningful amount.Join MSN Cars on FacebookFollow us on TwitterPerformanceImage © SsangyongThere's just a two-litre diesel initially, linked to manual or automatic transmission, both six speed. With its 175hp no rival can better it for power, though with diesels it's usually torque not power that is the real decider. On the road the Korando certainly feels lively, but not noticeably better than the Hyundai ix35, which has almost 40hp less. And by concentrating on peak power, the Ssangyong needs a bit more gearchanging at lower speeds to keep the engine on the boil. Not that this is a major problem, nor is the fact that, from the outside, there's a fair bit of diesel clatter when the engine is idling. Inside the passenger compartment, except when accelerating hard, the Korando is remarkable for its quietness, especially when motorway cruising.Ride and handlingImage © SsangyongEvery crossover vehicle trades a bit of ride comfort for agile handling and the Korando is no different. This is one area where a regular family hatch should score extra points. So you do notice the bumps and imperfections in the road, especially at low speeds, but the ride smoothes out as you go faster. The upside is that this Ssangyong drives and handles well in everyday circumstances with a full suite of clever electronics to stabilise the chassis if you approach the limits of grip.Hill start is standard (the brakes hold the car momentarily as you move off, without the need for the handbrake) though there is no hill-descent control as on the Hyundai.InteriorImage © SsangyongSome good and bad points here. Space for passengers is impressive, with particularly decent legroom in the rear and plenty of seat adjustment for tall drivers. The seats themselves are supportive and comfortable, but then we run into a few issues. The view to the rear is heavily obscured by the thick rear pillars, making guesswork necessary when reversing. The main luggage area is only just passable for a car of this size. There is a set of shallow compartments hidden beneath the false boot floor and if you don't opt for a spare wheel there's a big round space still further down.Image © SsangyongOn the positive side, as the divided rear seat backrest cantilevers forward the cushion goes with it too, resulting in a perfectly flat floor, an increasing rarity these days. The fascia is clean, neat, but uninspired in its design; it seems workmanlike compared with more glitzy rivals. The dashboard is made of bone-hard plastic too, without any of the touchy-feely softness found in so many cars these days.Economy and safetyImage © SsangyongThe more powerful the engine, the worse the potential economy, yet Ssangyong claims an average of 47mpg, which is about the same as the Hyundai and Kia; pretty good, we reckon.Emissions of 157g/km of CO2 are also reasonable. Ssangyong says the Korando, with its six airbags, would get five stars in the EuroNCAP safety tests, though it has not been independently evaluated. The MSN Cars verdictThe Korando is something of a surprise, very much closer to the standards of the established rivals than expected. Even its negative points are insufficient to downrate it much. Our concern is more focused on the dealer network that may not meet the expectations of those coming from the mainstream brands. A seven-year warranty on a Sportage from an established Kia dealer is tough competition for Ssangyong.Join MSN Cars on FacebookFollow us on TwitterNeed to know Engines, petroln/aEngines, diesel2.0 TurboPower, hp175Torque, lb ft2650-62 mph, secs10.0Top speed, mph121Mpg combined47.0CO2, g/km / Tax157, 22% RatingsSsangyong Korando 2.0D High Line 2wdPerformance****Ride & handling***Interior****Safety****Price****Practicality****Fuel economy***MSN Cars verdict****Read another Ssangyong review on MSN CarsKeep in touch with the top car stories by signing up to the weekly MSN Cars newsletter.
